Discover world famous Russian caviar during an unforgettable “ikra” tasting. Nobody loves and knows caviar like Russians. Caviar testing has made its consumption nothing less of an art. Russia’s black gold has a long and thrilling history. While this expensive delicacy may not have originated in here, it has become synonymous with Russia.

The Persians called caviar “cake of power,” believing it increased their strength and endurance. They were the first to consume sturgeon eggs, taking advantage of the incredible resources of the Caspian Sea and the rivers flowing into it. Following the great trading routes of Central Europe, caviar appeared at the Russian court. Caviar was so highly prized in Russia that it was reserved for the sole delight of the Tsar and the imperial family.

In modern Russia, caviar is much more than food. Nowadays, it is a delicacy enjoyed by the rich and powerful and in Europe, it is considered to be the height of all luxuries, above even champagne and truffles.

There are many different types of caviar. True caviar comes from sturgeon, while caviar alternatives come from other types of fish like paddlefish, trout, and salmon. Russian “black” caviar can be divided into the main sturgeon species fished off the coast of Russia, in the Caspian Sea: Beluga, Osetra, Sevruga and Sterlet.

During the degustation, you will try around five different types of caviar. Two types of black caviar of sturgeon: Sterlet and Oseitra. Three types of salmon caviar: Humpbacked salmon (pink), Keta salmon and red salmon (Nekra).

Two traditional accompaniments, blinis (pan cakes) and sour cream, will add to the experience without overwhelming the caviar.

During tasting, you will learn about the history, difference and types of caviar and will participate in a little competition, blind caviar testing. Winners will be awarded with special gifts. After the competition, you may buy black caviar and salmon caviar. Special certificates will be given allowing you to take caviar out of Russia.
